THE HALT AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SECOND-LANGUAGE TEACHING
The Hawaii Association of Language Teachers (HALT) is seeking nominations
for its 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards are made to
recognize the outstanding contributions and achievements of second
language teachers in teaching and promoting Hawaiian and foreign
languages in the State of Hawaii.
The recipients will be honored during special presentations at the
26th Hawai‘i Association of Language Teachers (HALT) Conference
on April 7, 2012 at the Kamakakaokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, UH Manoa campus.
Guidelines for Nominations:
1. For this year, the award will be open to language teachers at
all levels: elementary, secondary, and post-secondary. Two winners
will be selected: one from K-12, and one from college level.
2. Nominees and nominators must be members of HALT in good standing;
nominations must be made by a minimum of two HALT members.
3. Nominations must be in writing and should state the qualifications
and achievements of the nominees. (Nomination form attached).
4. Once nominated, each candidate must complete an application form,
which includes vitae and two letters of recommendation. Letters
must come from a colleague who teaches foreign languages and the
nominee's administrator. Documentation supporting the nomination
may be included.
5. Criteria for selection:
a) evidence of effective teaching (evaluations, objective data such
as number of students, etc.).
b) participation in professional development activities.
c) service to the foreign language profession or foreign language
related service to the community.
6. Upon selection, the nominee must be willing to attend the Spring
HALT conference to receive the award.
7. The names of nominees and nominations will be held in confidence
by the Selection Committee.
8. Nominations and supporting documents (one original and two copies)
must be submitted no later than March 1, 2012 (see below).
