2017 HALT Fall Symposium program

Our featured presentations

Session A: Sparking Interest in the Language Classroom by Rachel Mamiya Hernandez (University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa)
This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the free, online Adobe Spark suite of tools which allow you to make high-quality graphics, videos, and interactive webpages.  The presentation will include multiple examples of how these tools can be used in the language classroom.
Session B: Beyond PP & P by Cindy Wong (Washington Middle School)
PowerPoint and Prezi is so passé when you can animate your way into the minds of you students! With a few clicks, some drag and drop, and your creativity, you can wow your students with your next GoAnimate or PowToon presentation. Then, let them at it to create their own masterpieces. Bring your laptops and ideas for your next presentation!
Session C: Read, Sing, Action with Newsela, Learning with Lyrics, and Flipgrid by Edna-Mayra Hickling & Dania Hill (Waipahu High School)
In this workshop you will learn the differing benefits that Lyrics Training and Flipgrid offer. Students love to listen to music, sing  and record themselves. Lyrics Training is an easy and fun way to learn and improve students’ listening skills through songs and videos with a variety of activities. Fostering meaningful conversations can be done by creating grids of short discussion-style questions using student answers in a video format using Flipgrid.

NOTE: There are computers available in each room, but we recommend bringing along a laptop if you have one. WiFi will be available at the event.

Teacher’s Swap Meet

Please join us for our HALT Teachers’ Swap Meet (Moore 155A) during the symposium.

How it works: Bring any new or gently used books, workbooks, posters, materials, teaching supplies, cultural items, educational games etc. and drop them off in Moore Hall 155A between 7:30 am-8:00 am on the day of the Swap Meet. Items will be grouped by price and set up on tables.

**Please only bring teaching/classroom-related items. Do NOT bring used household items, clothing etc. They will not be accepted **
